Cave Moderne is the debut full-length LP by The God in Hackney released in an edition of 300 copies on translucent orange vinyl. The album will be released digitally in July 2014.

Cave Moderne is prehistoric-future music by Andy Cooke, Dan Fox, Ashley Marlowe & Nathaniel Mellors; a concept album set in the contemporary Neolithic. It features chants, drums, guitars, synths, shells, earth, teeth, bits of tree & crap music apps – this is the soundtrack to our contemporary cave life.

The God in Hackney incorporates present and former members of Skill 7 Stamina 12 (Junior Aspirin), Socrates that practices music (Junior Aspirin), Charlottefield (Fat Cat), Imitation Electric Piano (Duophonic), Advanced Sportswear (Junior Aspirin), Conemelt (Sabres of Paradise) and Big Legs (Junior Aspirin). Live shows have included the Centre Pompidou, Paris, Performa11, New York and the ICA, London.

“One question, Mr President: can we mud-wrestle here?”

Junior Aspirin Records is pleased to announce the release of a new four-track EP by Dan Fox. Recorded at home in New York, the EP follows up on Fox’s 2009 album for Junior Aspirin Records, ‘Easy Sneezing at the Century’.

Listening to Fox’s latest EP, the educated ear will fail to detect references to ABC, OMD, COB, ELO, XTC, X-TG, DNA, DFA, DAF or any other names you care to drop; references are for footnotes and job applications. Rather, these four tracks soft-shoe shuffle between genres of middlebrow adult rock, Russo-Inuit fusion-lite, and the mating sounds of one million randy cicadas emerging above ground for the first time in 17 years; the music conjuring images such as a ‘cut along dotted line’ neck tattoo or the sight of your ex-lover padding through an exclusive Swiss sanitorium in a soft towelling robe. Limning the triangular no-fly zone between amateurism, sentimentality and environmental irresponsibility, Fox’s music rigorously avoids the cocktail party circuit and large groups of people, preferring instead to remain resolutely stand-offish to some, yet warm and personable to others.

The EP is the 24th release on Junior Aspirin Records, and is available as a free download HERE.

Dan Fox lives in New York, USA. He currently plays in the bands Big Legs and God in Hackney, and is, along with Andy Cooke and Nathaniel Mellors, co-founder of Junior Aspirin Records. Fox has played with outfits including Skill 7 Stamina 12, Norwegian Lady, Mysterius Horse, Big Red and Advanced Sportswear, and with Andy Cooke and Tom Cobbe he performed with and co-produced Invisible Polytechnic’s 2011 recording of ‘In C’ by Terry Riley. Recent solo releases include contributions to ‘True Mirror Microfiche/Double AA Side’ (DS al Coda, New York, 2011); ‘The Crystal Flowers of Florine Stettheimer’ (Mathew Records, Berlin, 2012); a cover of Arthur Russell’s ‘A Little Lost’ (Junior Aspirin, 2012); ‘Bruce, Imperial’ for the exhibition ‘Soundworks’ at the ICA London; and produced Junior Aspirin Records’  ‘Audio Annotations’ listening sessions for The Serving Library at The Banff Centre for the Arts, Canada and Artists Space, New York. He is co-editor of frieze magazine, and has recently written sleeve notes for ‘Desertshore/The Final Report’ by X-TG, and ‘You’re Human Like the Rest of Them: The Films of BS Johnson’ for the British Film Institute.

‘One question, Mr President: who do you moonlight for?’

THE REBEL – THE RACE AGAINST TIME HOTS UP http://www.junioraspirin.com/wp/the-rebel-the-race-against-time-hots-up/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-rebel-the-race-against-time-hots-up http://www.junioraspirin.com/wp/the-rebel-the-race-against-time-hots-up/#comments Fri, 09 Sep 2011 09:26:53 +0000 http://www.junioraspirin.com/wp/?p=82 Limited 12″ Vinyl LP

The Race Against Time Hots Up is a big-time return to songwriting from Country Teasers’ frontman Ben ‘The Rebel’ Wallers. Wallers’ albums are always something to be savoured – but skewed, experimental, sardonic pop music is his metier and The Race Against Time Hots Up is up there with his best albums (such as cult favourites ‘Prawns’ and ‘Satan Is Real Again’). Check out the songs ‘Tyme’, ‘Colaboration’, ‘Adam, Eve, Mary and Fumeha or ‘Keen Air for Chasseur John’ – in fact check all tracks, this album is pop-chock-stock full o’ goodies from the renegade master.

This record follows Country Teasers’ last album W.O.A.R. (Holy Mountain Records, 2009) and Junior Aspirin Records’ release of The Rebel – The  Incredible Hulk (2010).

Interviewed by his manager Tony Pearson for this press release, The Rebel wrote the following press release on behalf of his great friends over there at JUNIOR ASPIRIN, a record label who really appreciate THE REBEL and take h** seriously.

TP: “You said once that you thought experimental music was a bit too difficult?”

[a symbol which lokks a bit like a swastika]: “Yes that’s right. At the time, i was sort of striving if you like to get i mean achieve a decent pop song, the discipline in which i had discided to operate in, since when i startd, in Pop, that was oooohhhhh [sucks air between teeth} 89."

TP: "Is your new album, 'The Race Against Time Hots Up', in many ways a response to your previous album, 'The Incredible Hulk'?

\+_:  That's right. I tried well not very hard to do an album which would be unpleasant to listen to, a bit like when David Banner [not Bruce: see early comics, and the TV series] says “Con’t make me angry; can you turn that music down please; you won’t like me if i get angry and bloody smash your radio, would you!” So once i had Got that out of my system, i thought Come on now Benedict knuckle down and get back to trying hard to make Pop music.

TP: Gosh! It’s a bit stupid hearing you say you try to make Pop music! Isn’t that like David Bowie saying he makes Tall music? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

TP: Oh right! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! or or or or Peabo Bryson saying he’s made love with Roberta Flack! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

>”_=: Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! During ‘Tonight I Celebrate My Love’, you mean! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

TP: Yes! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! ‘Tonight -” [sings] “-I celebrate -”

,=’_: “…My love; for yoooooooooou…!” Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

TP: Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

>[+_: Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha !

TP: Could you talk a little about the new record?

+]|_: Well I really wanted to do a record that would get me back on the ‘straight and narrow’. which i meantersay Pip old chap you know, melodies, verse-chorus-middle eight, proper lyrics with rhymes, maybe a bit of a story here and there. Most importantly, live drums.

TP: This interview, which started out boring, has reached an ecstatic boring-climax: shall we abort it?

Further Conclusions Against an Italian Version (BAT) is the debut album from Socrates that practiçes music. The London-based group have been compared to Bauhaus and A Certain Ratio, The Nightingales and The Mekons. Recently Socrates would be well described as a two-man metagoth outfit who use samplers, synths, guitars and drums to explore the occult, shire horses, legal wrangles and less-than-confident gardeners. “It’s like Country Life magazine edited by M.R. James and designed by Barney Bubbles” (Norris Stoat, Melody Maker).

“…art-rock and neo-folk with an eccentric counterpoint to place themselves beyond the reach of all. Stabs at profundity that reach beyond the cabaret or the intentionally weird and find themselves in the orbit of the Jefferies brothers at a better time for us all.” (Doug Mosurock)

“…As much as the term “art rock” makes me shudder (isn’t all music “art”?), Further Conclusions is, in a post-Devo age, as artsy as it gets outside of possibly the work of the folks who started out as artists and moved into audio (Stephen Spera, Hoor-Paar-Kraat) and as frustrating — and occasionally gratifying — as any record I’ve heard since the reemergence of prog delivered bands like The Rhythm Of Black Lines. Not bad company.” (Gumshoe)

Invisible Polytechnic, are a loosely classical ensemble with world and experimental music influences, featuring custom-built analogue synthesiser Misty holding down a gradually changing musical pulse. In C was written in 1964 and is one of the major works of 20th-century classical music. Riley, along with Steve Reich, Philip Glass and La Monte Young was one of the founding fathers of minimalism – a musical movement away from the clutches of over-cerebral serial music of the 1950s, embracing repetition, process and consonant harmony.

“Large British ensemble scales the infinite peaks of Riley’s famed composition, carrying on the original’s sense of whimsical urgency and a polite yet curious air throughout both sides. Those expecting “new music ensemble”-type instrumentation and presence can breathe easily here, as Mark Pilkington and co. are not out to do more but present the exacting majesty of the piece in respectable terms, via a large chamber and choral ensemble. And in that sense, they win – indisputably. If you’ve never heard the piece, this and Riley’s original are good places to start, followed by the Styrenes’ version of it, and dead last, Acid Mothers Temple.” (Doug Mosurock) STILL SINGLE

“In early 2007 I was looking for three people to film shouting dialogue whilst strapped to trees in the New Forest. Robin Klassnik of Matt’s Gallery suggested the 59 year-old Bob Parks, recalling some unusual performances Bob had realised when they were both art students in Leicester in the late 1960s. Bob was up for it, and he cheerfully delivered the dialogue, attached to the tree by an uncomfortable nylon jock-strap. During filming he happened to mention that he had studied at the Lee Strasberg Institute in Los Angeles in the 1970s and invited me to his Mum’s nearby bungalow to see his work. I was totally gob-smacked by what I saw there: the bungalow was (and still is) a living artwork, crackling with energy. The walls were completely covered, and the garage jammed full of fantastic painting, sculpture, performance documentation, video, photography and writing, spanning five decades of production. In the middle of it all was Bob’s mum, Marjorie Parks, in her 80s, sat addressing envelopes. When Bob sent me a CD-R of this album in spring 2008, I had no clue what to expect, not realising then how fundamental music was to Bob’s work. I put it on and found it brilliant.” Nathaniel Mellors, 2008
